Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. However, she left school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. It was not without challenges. When she was offered a job as a model in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to find work in the stage. While in New York, she worked at a bar as the check-in lady before resigning and moving back to Boston. She was an usherette during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
